How to install an APK on Android safely
Installing an app from a file is simple. These steps work on Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Pixel and other Android phones.
Apps from Google Play install with one tap. An app downloaded as an APK file (Android's app package) needs one extra permission: you allow your browser or file manager to install apps, once. Here is the safe way to do it.
- Download the APKOn your phone, open the download page and tap Download APK. Chrome may say the file can be harmful: that message appears for every APK and is not about this app. Tap Download anyway.
- Open the downloaded fileTap the download notification, or open the Files app, then Downloads, and tap
ECOMHUTSY-Webmail. - Allow installs from this sourceAndroid shows For your security, your phone is not allowed to install unknown apps from this source. Tap Settings, turn on Allow from this source, then go back.
- Tap InstallAndroid shows the app name and icon. Tap Install and wait a few seconds.
- Open and sign inTap Open, enter your email address and its password, and your inbox loads.
Where the setting lives differs by brand: Settings, Apps, Special app access, Install unknown apps (Pixel, Samsung); Settings, Privacy, Special permissions (Xiaomi); Settings, Security (older phones). You can turn it off again after installing.
How to stay safe with APK files
- Download apps only from the developer's own website. For ECOMHUTSY Webmail that is webmailapk.com or ecomhutsy.com.
- Check the file. The download page lists the SHA-256 checksum and signing certificate of every release.
- Be careful with "modded" or re-uploaded APKs on other sites. They can contain unwanted code.
- Keep Google Play Protect on. It scans apps from any source.
Fixing install errors
| Message | What to do |
|---|---|
| There was a problem parsing the package | The download was incomplete. Delete it and download again on Wi-Fi. |
| App not installed | Free some storage, and make sure an older copy from another source is not installed. If it is, uninstall it first. |
| Blocked by Play Protect | Tap More details, then Install anyway. Play Protect asks about apps it has not seen from Play. |
| Nothing happens when you tap the file | Open it from the Files app instead of the browser's download list. |
Updating later
Download the newer APK and install it over the old one. Your mailboxes and settings stay, because every release is signed with the same ECOMHUTSY certificate.
Questions and answers
Is it safe to allow unknown sources?
The setting only lets the one app you choose (your browser or file manager) install apps. Allow it for the install, then turn it off again if you like.
Do I need to root my phone?
No. Installing an APK never needs root.
